Ribeira Grande Tourist Tax 2026: What Alojamento Local Hosts Need to Know

If you host guests in Ribeira Grande — São Miguel's second-largest town, known for its thermal pools, black-sand coastline, and the Salto do Prego waterfall trail — you're required to collect a municipal tourist tax on their behalf. This guide covers the exact rate, who's exempt, how to register, and how to stay compliant without turning it into a monthly headache.

What Is the Ribeira Grande Tourist Tax?

The tourist tax (taxa turística municipal) is a small per-person, per-night charge added on top of the accommodation price, collected by the host and passed on to the municipality. Ribeira Grande introduced its tax alongside Ponta Delgada, Lagoa, and Vila Franca do Campo — the four São Miguel municipalities that began collection on January 1, 2025, as part of a wider push by Azorean local governments to fund tourism infrastructure and services. Unlike some mainland municipalities that only charge in summer, Ribeira Grande applies the €2 rate every night of the year — there's no off-season discount to plan around.

Who Is Exempt?

Not every guest pays the tax. In Ribeira Grande, the following are exempt:

  • Children under 13 — no charge, regardless of stay length

  • Guests staying beyond the third night — the tax only applies to the first 3 nights of any continuous stay; nights 4 and beyond are tax-free

  • Standard exemptions typically also apply for medical treatment, students in officially recognized programs, and people with disabilities and their accompanying caregiver, though hosts should confirm the current exemption list directly with the municipality, as these details can change

Worked example: A family of two adults and one 15-year-old stays 5 nights. The tax applies to all 3 guests (the 15-year-old is over 13) but only for the first 3 nights: 3 guests × €2 × 3 nights = €18 total, with nights 4 and 5 free of the tax.

Registration: How to Set Up as a Host

Ribeira Grande requires accommodation providers to register with the municipality within 30 days of starting activity, using the iTAXAS platform:

  1. Access the iTAXAS registration portal linked from the Ribeira Grande municipal tourist-tax site

  2. Register as an "agente económico" (economic operator) using your NIF and Alojamento Local registration number Tourist Tax declarations can be automated using EazyAL and iTaxas

  3. Add each property you operate under your account

  4. Set your declaration frequency (monthly or quarterly, depending on volume)

  5. Confirm registration and keep your login for ongoing declarations

How to Charge Guests

Most hosts add the tourist tax as a separate line item at checkout or in the booking confirmation, rather than folding it into the nightly rate — this keeps pricing transparent and matches what guests expect from Portuguese accommodation generally. Airbnb and Booking.com don't automatically calculate Ribeira Grande's tax for you, so hosts typically either:

  • Add it manually as an additional fee per reservation, or

  • Collect it in cash/by transfer at check-in, or

  • Use compliance software that calculates it automatically per booking

Declaring and Paying the Tax

After collecting the tax from guests, hosts must declare and remit it to the municipality on the schedule chosen at registration — typically monthly or quarterly. Declarations are submitted through the iTAXAS platform, listing the number of taxable guest-nights for the period. Late or missed declarations can result in penalties, so it's worth setting a recurring reminder or automating the process.

FAQ

Does the Ribeira Grande tourist tax apply in winter?

Yes. Unlike municipalities with seasonal tourist taxes, Ribeira Grande charges the €2/night rate year-round.

Do I charge the tax on a booking made through Airbnb or Booking.com?

Yes — the tax applies regardless of which platform the booking came through. Neither platform currently calculates or remits it automatically on your behalf in Ribeira Grande, so you're responsible for collecting and declaring it yourself.

What happens if I don't register or declare the tax?

Failure to register within 30 days of starting activity, or missing declaration deadlines, can result in fines from the municipality. It's treated as a compliance obligation, not an optional add-on.

Is the tax charged per person or per room?

Per person, per night — not per room or per booking. A group of four adults staying 2 nights owes tax for all four guests across both nights.

Can I pass the exact tax amount on to my guests?

Yes, and it's standard practice to do so — most hosts list it as a separate "municipal tourist tax" line item so guests understand it's a local government charge, not a markup.

Staying Compliant Without the Manual Work

Between SIBA guest reporting, Modelo 30, and now municipal tourist tax declarations across potentially several municipalities, manual tracking gets error-prone fast — especially if you manage more than one property.
