Tourist Tax in Machico: A Complete Guide for AL Hosts (2026)

If you run an Alojamento Local in Machico, you now have one more compliance obligation on your plate: the municipal tourist tax (Taxa Turística). The Câmara Municipal de Machico launched its own dedicated platform for managing this tax, and if you haven't registered yet, it's time to get that sorted.

This guide walks you through what the tax is, who it applies to, and exactly how to register and submit your declarations.

What is the Machico Tourist Tax?

The tourist tax (Taxa Turística, or TT) is a per-night charge that AL hosts collect from guests and then declare and remit to the municipality. It applies specifically to overnight stays — the so-called "dormida" component. The municipality uses revenue from this tax to fund local tourism infrastructure and services.

Machico is one of several municipalities across Madeira and mainland Portugal that has introduced this charge. If your property is licensed in the Machico municipality — which covers the parishes of Machico, Caniçal, Porto da Cruz, Água de Pena, and Santo António da Serra — this applies to you.

For the full legal detail, the official regulation is available here: Regulamento da Taxa Turística de Machico.

The municipality also provides a multilingual flyer (Portuguese, English, French, German) that explains the tax to both hosts and guests: Flyer TT Machico — 4 idiomas.

Who Has to Comply?

The tax obligation falls on the economic agent — that's you, the AL host or property manager. You are responsible for:

  • Collecting the tax from guests at the time of check-in or during the stay

  • Registering as an economic agent on the platform

  • Submitting periodic declarations via the online portal

  • Paying the declared amount to the municipality

Whether you manage your property directly or use a property manager, someone needs to be registered and making those declarations. If you're a remote host, don't assume your channel manager is handling this — it almost certainly isn't.

Who is Exempt?

Not every guest triggers the charge. The following are exempt:

  • Children under 13 years old

  • Individuals with a permanent disability of 60% or more

  • Guests relocated due to emergency situations

  • Guests undergoing medical treatment (and their companions)

  • Invited guests of the Municipality or of supported events

For any exempt guest, you still need to record the exemption properly when submitting your declaration.

How to Register: Step by Step

Everything is managed through the official platform at tmt.cm-machico.pt.

Step 1 — Go to the platform

Head to tmt.cm-machico.pt. This is the dedicated tourist tax portal for Machico, separate from the main municipal website.

Step 2 — Create your account

Click on "Se ainda não tem registo..." (If you don't have an account yet). This takes you to the new economic agent registration form. Fill in your details — you'll need your NIF, contact information, and details about your AL property or properties.

Step 3 — Confirm your registration

After submitting the registration form, you'll receive confirmation. Once approved, you'll have access to the restricted area of the platform.

Step 4 — Log in to your account

Return to tmt.cm-machico.pt and click "Já está Registado?" (Already registered?), then go to "Autenticação" to log in.

Step 5 — Access the forms

Once logged in, navigate to "Formulários." This is where you'll find the periodic declaration forms for submitting your tourist tax data — number of nights, number of guests, applicable exemptions, and so on.

Step 6 — Submit your declaration

Complete the form for the relevant period and submit it online. Through the platform you can also track previous submissions and download the corresponding invoice/receipt.

Step 7 — Pay the tax

The platform will generate the relevant documentation. Payment instructions and deadlines are set out in the regulation — make sure you check the applicable deadlines to avoid penalties.

Useful Resources on the Platform

The Machico tourist tax platform offers more than just the submission forms. You'll also find:

  • The full tourist tax regulation (PDF)

  • Multilingual flyers you can print and display for guests (available in Portuguese, English, French, and German)

  • A version of the flyer focused on explaining the tax to tourists, and another aimed at economic agents

  • Access to your submission history and invoices

All of these are available directly on tmt.cm-machico.pt.

What About Guests?

You're required to inform guests that the tourist tax applies to their stay. The municipality has made this easy by providing ready-made flyers in four languages. You can download and print these to display at your property, or include the information in your welcome message.

The flyer aimed at tourists is available here: Flyer TT Machico — Versão focada nos turistas.

There's also an English-only version here: Flyer TT Machico — Inglês.
